Summer Packing List

What should you bring with you on your trip to Israel?

Here's a packing list filled with great suggestions. A good hint: If you can't lift it yourself, then your bag is too full! Remember -- it will only get heavier once you buy gifts and souvenirs!

-2 pairs of Jeans (for hiking and going out at night)
-1 pair of Sweatpants
-1 Sweatshirt/Sweater
-1 Long sleeved shirt
-6 Short sleeved shirts
-4 pairs of shorts
-2 Bathing suits
-2 Button-down shirts
-2 Long skirts
-1 pair Khaki or Corduroy pants
-1 Towel (for swimming outside of the hotel)
-2 Plastic bags for wet clothes
-Undergarments
-Socks
-Light jacket
-Sandals
-Sneakers or walking shoes (with straps or laces)
-Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers (must be closed-toe, for rougher terrain)
-Sleepwear
-Hat/Baseball cap (to help avoid dehydration from the sun)
-Travel alarm
-Flashlight
-Camera
-Fanny pack or money belt
-A kippah/yarmulke and talit/prayer shawl (although not required, you may want to bring them)
-Day pack for overnight use at Bedouin tent

Shabbat Shalom!

We recommend that you bring modest clothing (knee-length skirts for women, head coverings for men, and shirts covering the shoulders for both men and women) to wear for Shabbat and for visiting religious areas and sites. (A jacket and tie are not necessary.) Please make sure that your Shabbat clothes are warm (either the A/C will be cranked up where services are held and/or your walk back to the hotel will be chilly).

Toiletries

Most of the same American products are available in Israel, although they are at a substantially higher cost. Plan to bring:

-Shampoo/Conditioner
-Soap
-Toothbrush
-Toothpaste
-Deodorant
-Lip balm
-Razor
-After-shave
-
Band-Aids
-Tampons/pads
-Sunscreen
-
Tylenol/Ibuprofen
-
Eyeglasses/contact lenses and contact lense solution if needed
-Anti-bacterial hand lotion
-
Prescription medicine (acquiring the generic name is recommended)

Other

A few more suggestions that will make your trip to Israel more comfortable:

-Batteries
-Tissue Packs
-Sunglasses
-Photocopy of your passport
-Gum/candy
-Water bottle holder
-Baby wipes can make hot days more comfortable
-Cell phones can be rented in Israel. Make sure to register using a bus number, so that the phone can be given to you upon arrival in Israel. Click here for the online order form

Money, ATMs and Tips

The currency in Israel is the shekel (or the New Israel Shekel NIS). Since you will only be responsible for casual meals (one per day max), you will only need enough shekels for those meals, snacks, tips and any shopping you may wish to do. We encourage participants to offer a gratuity to their Israeli tour guide and bus driver of $60. We also suggest bringing about $300 to Israel to cover casual meals and spending money. ATMs in Israel dispense shekels and can be found in the airport and throughout the bigger cities you visit. Credit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants (except in the casual food stands and outdoor markets you might visit). We do NOT recommend that you bring traveler checks to Israel, as they are not widely accepted.

If you forget anything, don't panic. You can purchase whatever you might need in Israel!
